Guitar Shorty to take stage at Chasco Fiesta today

NEW PORT RICHEY — Today will be a red letter day for blues lovers at Chasco Fiesta, as the Rhythm & Bluesmasters take the stage in Sims Park for 4 1/2 hours of their kind of music.

The headliner is David W. Kearney, better known as Guitar Shorty. Over the years he has played with the Ray Charles Band, Sam Cooke, Guitar Slim and the house band at New Orleans' legendary Dew Drop Inn. Guitar Shorty has released 10 albums, including his latest, The Best of Guitar Shorty: The Long and Short of It.

Opening acts are bluesman Damon Fowler and the Bone Yard Dogs.

Chasco continues through Sunday in and around downtown New Port Richey.

Today

10 a.m. to 9 p.m.: Special school programs at Native American Festival; all vendors open to the public

5 to 10 p.m.: Chasco Carnival

6 to 10 p.m.: Rhythm & Bluesmasters ($5)

7:30 p.m.: Katrina Big Mountain, Women's Plains History

Friday

9 a.m. to 11 p.m.: Chasco Carnival

10 a.m. to 10 p.m.: Native American Festival vendors open (special school programs available)

5 to 11 p.m.: West Pasco Sertoma Chicken Barbecue, $8

12:30 p.m.: Chasco Fiesta Golf Tournament, Crescent Oaks Country Club

6 to 11 p.m.: True Oldies Night in the Park ($5)

5:30 p.m.: Tommy Wildcat, Native American flutist, performance ring in encampment

6 p.m.: Steve Hoddy, Birds of Prey

6:30 p.m.: Kris Kelly, storyteller

7 p.m.: Robin Jumper, Cherokee history

7:30 p.m.: Chipa Wolfe, Warrior on Horseback

8 p.m.: Mike Gilbert, flint knapper

8:30 p.m.: Native American dancers

9 p.m.: Aztec dancers
