Love these Valentine's Day events

Somehow when we weren't looking Valentine's Day morphed into a full-blown event day. Forget dinner and a date. Now we have nightclub theme nights, pseudo proms and pet adopt-a-thons. We've rounded up some of the best ones from around the bay.

A totally rad good time

Take your special someone out to a nice dinner then head to Ybor for the '80s Prom for some smokin' tunes by Rubix Cubed, the awesome '80s cover band. Or, if you're in Ybor for the Knights of Sant' Yago Illuminated Parade, come in for a break from the debauchery. 7 p.m., Ritz Ybor, 1503 E Seventh Ave., Tampa. $10. (813) 247-2555.

Keep your eyes off (on?) the bodies

Join Nancy Wall, president of Tampa Bay MatchMakers, for a Valentine's Day singles mixer with interactive discussions on hints and tips on dating and relationships. It also includes free admission to the Body Worlds exhibit, but you might want to keep the anatomy jokes to yourself. 6-9 p.m. at Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), 4801 E Fowler Ave., Tampa. $18.95. Admission includes appetizers and dessert. (813) 987-6000.

"Smack My A-- … I'm Single!"

That's the name of a V-Day promotion at Tijuana Flats restaurants. On Saturday and Sunday, all single guests — or those lucky couples — over age 21 will receive one free beer or $2 sangria with the purchase of any entree.

That's hot

Turn up the heat with the Valentine Veggie Chili Cookoff. Bring a vegetarian chili or side dish and watch The Princess Bride. 6 p.m., Sweetwater Organic Community Farm, 6942 W Comanche Ave., Tampa. $5 donation, registration requested. (813) 887-4066.

Just like the good old days

Dance the night away with the 18-piece Gulf Bay Big Band in a nonsmoking environment at the Valentine's Day Dance. Don't know a swing dance from a swing set? Carol Baker will give lessons from 7:30 to 8 p.m. The dance runs from 8 to 11 p.m., Gulfport Casino, 5500 Shore Blvd. S, Gulfport. $12. (727) 893-1070.

A rock 'n' roll romantic evening

Rock out at the Valentine's Day Massacre show, with Of Heroes and Legends, a Hand to the Fallen, When Honor Meant Everything, Set the Sights, With Increase, Take Charge! and Decipher the Moment. 8 p.m., Neptune Lounge and Cyclery, 13 S Safford Ave., Tarpon Springs. (727) 943-5713.

Sometimes you feel like a nut

As you enter the Nuts and Bolts Party, you'll either be given a nut or a bolt. Find the corresponding match for your hardware and win some prizes. Plus enjoy the singles happy hour from 8 to 10 p.m., Push Ultra Lounge, 128 Third St. S, St. Petersburg. $10 cover after 11 p.m. (727) 895-7874.

Find a companion

A fuzzy one, that is. Plenty of adorable dogs are looking for a new home, and at Saturday's Cupids and Canines Adopt-a-thon, you might just find a match. Free, but donations are appreciated; they'll benefit Bow Wow Buddies, a movement to find a cure for canine cancer. 12:30-3:30 p.m., Camp Bow Wow Tampa Airport Dog Daycare & Boarding, 4624 N Grady Ave., Tampa. (813) 870-2267.

And if it doesn't go well …

On Sunday night, if you're feeling lonely, head to Push Ultra Lounge for a party called Love Bites. Bring a picture of your ex, and you'll get a free drink. Oh, and the pictures will be destroyed. Now that's a V-Day tradition most singles can get behind. 9 p.m. No cover. 128 Third St. S, St. Petersburg.
