If you've had too much holiday shopping, haven't started yet, or don't plan to ever gift shop, you can still catch the holiday spirit at the New Port Richey Main Street celebration from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.
A day of activities, special sales, a children's art show, and performances by children's choral groups will be topped off by the annual Riverlights Boat Parade from Moonlight Bay to Sims Park starting at 6:30 p.m. Light-festooned boats of all sizes cruise up the Pithlachascotee River and make it glow.
The day begins at 9 a.m., with the Shop 'n Stroll along the streets of historic downtown. There will be crafts and poinsettias for sale and trolley rides through downtown and around Orange Lake to view Christmas Card Lane.
In Sims Park, 28 elementary, middle and high schools will show off more than 1,500 pieces of artwork, with prizes in three age categories and the special Mayor's Award and Cultural Affairs Committee's "Best of Show" prize.
Students from nine elementary schools' choral groups will perform throughout the day. Downtown restaurants are planning specials for the day. Boy Scout Troop 46 will sell hot dogs, hamburgers and beverages, and the Youth Advisory Board will sell snow cones and popcorn for those who want to stroll and eat.
Before and after
The celebration starts at Progress Energy Art Gallery from 6 to 9 tonight with the monthly artists reception and opening of the Holiday Handmade Gift Gallery. On Sunday, both the Progress Energy Art Gallery and the West Pasco Art Guild will hold open houses and art-related gift sales from noon until 3 p.m. The guild's studio is at 6206 Jefferson St. at Missouri Avenue, and the KIA trolley will provide rides between the two galleries and around Orange Lake to see Christmas Card Lane.
Progress Energy's "Noel Nibbler Gallery Holiday Party" features mimosas and light hors d'oeuvres for $5. That $5 can be applied toward the purchase of any item priced at $25 or more.
