Things to do Things to Do
 Today's TipSheet

On your radar: Get ready for St. Patrick's Day, laugh at Bob Newhart and Jay Mohr, watch 'Field of Dreams,' and check out a Jimi Hendrix tribute

St. Patrick's Day: As luck would have it, it's Saturday, so expect parties at every Irish bar (go to tampabay.com/things-to-do for a list). New this year, the Hillsborough River at Curtis Hixon Park will turn green for a free festival with food trucks starting at 10 a.m. At 2 p.m., the Garrison Channel at Channelside also turns green. And at 8 p.m., the Rough Riders night parade hits Ybor with beads, floats.

Bob Newhart: The former accountant turned iconic comedian doesn't talk dirty for laughs. Newhart, 82, is joined by Dean Martin's daughter, Deana, at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. $35.50-$70. (727) 791-7400.

Date night

Jay Mohr: Known for Saturday Night Live, Jerry Maguire, two books and podcast Mohr Stories, the comedian comes to the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg on Thursday. $35–$75. (727) 892-5798.

Field of Dreams: Never has an Iowa cornfield looked so heavenly as in this 1989 Kevin Costner baseball classic, showing at 3 and 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Capitol Theatre in Clearwater. $5.

Experience Hendrix Tour: A tribute to Jimi Hendrix with a jam session featuring Aerosmith's Brad Whitford, Dweezil Zappa, the Doors' Robby Krieger, Los Lobos' David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas and many more Thursday at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. $45–$100.

American Stage: The St. Petersburg theater opens two plays this week. 2.5 Minute Ride marks the return of Lisa Kay Powers, who plays a daughter on a journey to understanding her father, a Holocaust survivor. It double bills with A Steady Rain, a Broadway hit about Chicago cops in crisis. Both start Friday, with previews Wednesday and Thursday. (727) 823-7529.

Kids and family

Chalk Walk: About 50 artists will turn pavement into fleeting masterpieces in Hyde Park Village in Tampa. Also live entertainment and lots of kids activities Friday through Sunday. Free; tbbca.org or (813) 221-2787.

Gulf Beaches Spring Fling: American Idol finalist and hometown son Michael Lynche headlines this four-day fest Saturday at Treasure Island Community Park. It runs Thursday through Sunday with carnival rides and food and craft vendors. Free admission; mytreasureisland.org.

Mutt Strut: Tiny green leprechaun hats are in order for a stroll around the lake at this 20th annual event, which includes games, adoptable dogs and Wag Bags, to support the Humane Society of Pinellas. It's 9 a.m. Saturday at Eagle Lake Park in Largo.
