On your radar: See owls, bats, alligators and other creepy crawlies on a night hike — or check out an RNC sand castle display

Night Hike: Get a close look at some of the owls, bats, alligators and other creepy crawlies that come out after dusk during this hike starting at 8 p.m. at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve, 1101 Country Club Way S, St. Petersburg. $3, $1.50 children (reservations required). (727) 893-7326.

Panic: The Tampa Repertory Theatre is doing a staged reading of Archibald Macleish's rarely seen verse play — which had Orson Welles as the main character in its initial run — about economic panic and individual and corporate responsibility. It's at 7 p.m. at Studio@620 in St. Petersburg. $5. (727) 895-6620.

RNC Sand Castle Display: You can watch as 30 tons of imported sand is sculpted into giant sand castle replicas of President Abraham Lincoln, the Lincoln Memorial and the White House. They'll be completed by this weekend, in time for the start of the Republican National Convention. Free. They're being built behind the Bilmar Beach Resort, 10650 Gulf Blvd., Treasure Island.

Date night

Helios Jazz Orchestra: The 18-piece orchestra performs big band jazz music. There's also catered treats, cabaret seating, free valet parking and a full bar beginning at 7 p.m. at NOVA 535 Art Lounge, 535 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N, St. Petersburg. $15. (727) 821-6682.

To watch

Covert Affairs, 10 p.m., USA: Annie has to get the prime minister of Yemen's chief of staff to be a mole for the CIA. The P.M.'s having heart surgery; he won't mind.

Season premiere; Face Off, 9 p.m., SyFy: Sean Astin works with 11 new contestants trying to create aliens for a Star Wars movie. So this whole episode will be done on computers, then.

VH1 Do Something Awards, 9 p.m., VH1: Young celebs like Kristen Bell, Ben Affleck, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Nicole Richie, Neil Patrick Harris, Channing Tatum and Emma Stone are all nominated for being tops in community service hours. Wait, Ben Affleck isn't all that young.

Mysteries at the Museum, 9 p.m., Travel: It's a clip show. You'd think there'd be enough weirdness out there to avoid something like this.
