Friday's TipSheet

On your radar: Spring Awakening, Miss Julie, comedy in Ybor and a Charlie Sheen look-a-like contest

The Tony Award-winning Spring Awakening isn't the kind of musical you're used to. For one, there are no singing cats. And nobody is dressed as a witch or monster. Based on an 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, it was banned for nearly 100 years for depicting controversial content including rape, abortion and teen sex. The touring Broadway musical is coming to Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater for just three performances beginning Friday.

Did we freak you out too much with Spring Awakening? Maybe Miss Julie is more your speed. This masterful dissection of class and gender politics was first performed over a century ago and still resonates today. It's staged at the freeFall Theatre through April 10. (727) 498-5205; freefalltheatre.com.

All this theater talk leaving you in need of some real laughs? No sweat. Kevin "Dot Com" Brown is playing the Improv in Ybor this weekend. Who's Kevin Brown? He's best known as Tracy Morgan's friend and bodyguard Dot Com on the NBC comedy 30 Rock.

The yellow brick road starts and ends at the Mahaffey Theater, where Wizard of Oz plays one night only on Friday. Part of Mahaffey's Broadway Plus series, the show features breath-taking special effects, dazzling choreography and classic songs.

The Freaki Tiki Bar is embracing tabloid trash instead of trying to be above it all. The bar is holding a Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan look-alike contest Friday. You could win a trip to Vegas "plus bail money." The bar is at 28778 U.S. 19 N in Clearwater. (727) 329-6160.
