Pick a New Year's Eve party or event

. First Night St. Petersburg Celebration

St. Petersburg rings in the New Year with music, lights, dance, fire, bubbles, stories and fireworks at its annual celebration of the arts at multiple venues. There will be fireworks on the hour from 8-11 p.m. and then Fireworks Across the Bay at midnight. There will also be the Pier Aquarium Labyrinth at First Night and the kick-off to the St. Pete Waterfront Centennial Celebration with Discover History in the Parks. Participants can pick up a treasure map and locate five historic landmarks in North and South Straub parks. At the Pier, there will also be face painting (nominal charge), hat making and live performances. . Noon Year's Eve at the Zoo

So what if some of these performers may not have been around in 1979, that won't stop them from singing the hits of that year. . New Year's Eve Parade & Band Blast

Ybor City is the site of this festive celebration featuring the UnitedHealthcare Children's Foundation New Year's Eve Parade and a pep rally by the marching bands and cheerleaders whose teams will participate in the Jan. 1 Outback Bowl. Where to see fireworks

•Downtown St. Petersburg: First Night St. Petersburg promises the most elaborate fireworks display in the event's 17-year history. Starting at 8 p.m., fireworks will shoot off every hour on the hour until the midnight finale. They'll be launched from Spa Beach, by the Pier. (727) 823-8906; firstnightstpete.com.

• Channelside: Look up at 12 a.m. to catch fireworks choreographed to music, courtesy of the Downtown Tampa Attractions Association. The show will launch from a barge in the Garrison Channel, between Channelside and the Florida Aquarium. (813) 471-1531; funintampabay.com.

• Harbour Island: As usual, Jackson's Bistro in Tampa will treat its guests to a waterfront fireworks display. If you're in the area at midnight, you should have a clear view of the show. (813) 265-1234; piedpiperproductions.com.
