Joys of spring before summer suffocation

Springtime in Pinellas Park:
The Tampa Bay Opera, formally the Matinee Opera Players, presents "Songs of Friendship, Love and New Beginnings" at 3 p.m. today at the Performing Arts Center, 4951 78th Ave. N, Pinellas Park. Includes scenes from the operas Madama Butterfly, La Traviata and Cavaleria Rusticana, along with favorite arias and Broadway show tunes. $15; $10 seniors (55+) and groups of five or more; free for children 15 and under with paid admission. The Rite of Spring: The USF Symphony Orchestra performs one of Igor Stravinsky's most famous works at 4 p.m. today at the Palladium, 253 Fifth Ave. N, St. Petersburg. $6-$12. Call 822-3590.

Spring Community Festival: St. Pete Beach celebrates art, culture, sports and family with fun for all ages, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday at the St. Pete Beach Community Center Park and Pool, 7701 Boca Ciega Drive. Kids can enjoy a fishing tournament, Grom Contest at the skateboard park, games and bounce houses. Also an art fair in the park, airbrush tattoos, live music with Group Therapy and De'leid Parrots, and dedication of the Col. Michael J. Horan Park with color guard. Drawings and giveaways including skate and bike helmets. Area restaurants provide treats. Free admission; fees for some activities. For information, call 363-9245.
