Grab your snorkel

The Tampa Bay Watch and Tampa Bay Estuary Program need your help tracking local scallop populations in the Great Bay Scallop Search. Nearly 200 snorkelers are needed to search for scallops in select areas within the Boca Ciega and Lower Tampa Bay areas. The goal is to monitor and document the health and status of the bay scallop population. Meet at the Fort De Soto Park boat ramp. Any interested boaters or snorkelers should register at tampabaywatch.org. It's at 9 a.m. Saturday at Fort De Soto Park, 3500 Pinellas Bayway S, Tierra Verde. (727) 867-8166.

FRIDAY-SATURDAY

Jump and grab big air at a Trampoline Benefit Friday for the families of Tampa Police Officers Jeff Kocab and Dave Curtis, who were killed in the line of duty. The wall-to-wall trampolines at Airheads Trampoline Arena will be open from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 5072 W Linebaugh Ave. The cost is $12 for the first hour and $10 for each additional hour. Call (813) 247-4323.

Make a date with gulls

Bring a blanket or a low lawn chair for a free movie on Clearwater Beach for Sunset Cinema @ Pier 60 on Friday and Saturday. Instead of sticky floor and overpriced popcorn, you can dig your toes in the sand and ward off seagulls while you watch Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs on Friday and Jumanji on Saturday. The movies start at 8 p.m. at 10 Pier 60 Drive, Clearwater Beach.

SUNDAY

Ready for a date night? Dine Tampa Bay 2010 starts Sunday, offering diners in Tampa Bay special fixed-price, three-course meals at more than 50 restaurants. Thriller on wheels

THURSDAY

Hiaasen gets all fishy

Carl Hiaasen, the master of wacky Florida fiction, will give what likely will be a very funny talk and signing of his new book, Star Island, at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Florida Aquarium. Call (813) 253-2638 to reserve the book and order your tickets, which are free with the purchase of the book at Inkwood Books in Tampa. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and the book talk begins at 7 p.m. After the talk, Hiaasen will stick around and sign books. The aquarium is at 701 Channelside Drive, Tampa. inkwoodbooks.com.

5 under $5

FREE Update your landscape at budget prices at the Plant Sale at the Jail on Friday. Arrive early for the best selection of landscape plants, annuals, perennials and more, grown by inmates in the facility's Vocational Horticulture Program. Cash and check only, proceeds benefit the jail's horticulture program. Included in the sale are red maple, dwarf dragon fruit, firebush, ferns, Spanish thyme and more. It starts at 8 a.m., Falkenburg Road Jail, 520 N Falkenburg Road, Tampa. Free. (813) 744-5676.

FREE Oldsmar Alive, a coffeehouse and open-mic group of poets, artists and musicians, is taking its vibe to Ruth Eckerd Hall on Friday for a special visitor, renowned poet Glenis Redmond, a recipient of the 2005 North Carolina Arts Council Literary Award. Redmond will perform and an open mic will follow starting at 7 p.m. in the Murray Theater, 1111 N McMullen-Booth Road in Clearwater. (727) 791-7400.

$2 You'd think a beach town would not want to remind anyone of the horror of a great white shark feasting on swimmers, but Clearwater is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the chomptastic blockbuster Jaws by hosting a screening at the Capitol Theatre, 405 Cleveland St. at the 1975 price of $2. Before the most menacingly creepy musical score in film history gets started, there will be activities at 6 p.m. in the Cleveland Street district just outside the theatre. Phinley, the Clearwater Threshers mascot, will be on hand for photos, and animal experts will talk about the delicate relationship between dolphins (like the aquarium's soon-to-be movie star Winter) and sharks in the wild. The movie rolls at 7:45 p.m. Get tickets at the Ruth Eckerd Hall box office, 1111 N McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater or at the theater before the show.

$5 The 10th annual I Like It Hot Festival is going to make you sweat with barbecue and other fiery foods, sauces to sample, a pepper-eating contest and an amateur hot sauce and salsa competition. Free parking, $5 for adults, free for children 12 and younger. There's live music 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and music and comedy 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Minnreg Building, 6340 126th Ave. N, Largo. yourhotsaucecompany.com.

$5 The doggie paddle rules Saturday when Fossil Park Pool offers leash-free (and human-free) swimming and play for Dog Swim Day before the pool closes for the season. Bring proof of the dog's vaccinations and register for one of three 90-minute sessions, held at 9 and 11 a.m., and 1 p.m. The SPCA will be taking donations of dry Iams or Science Diet dog food, Nylabones, bleach, dish soap, trash bags, newspapers, clean towels and blankets at the pool, 6739 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. N, St. Petersburg. $5 per session.
