Lectores Speaker Series: Karen Russell: The Swamplandia! author is a last-minute replacement for Denis Johnson as the series' headliner. She'll talk about her novel and take questions from the audience. Begins at 7 p.m. in the Reeves Theater at the Vaughn Center, University of Tampa, 401 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa. Free.

Florida Orchestra Pops: Jump, Jive and Wail: Victor Vanacore leads the orchestra in dance tunes featuring award-winning swing dancers. They'll play hits by Duke Ellington, Cole Porter and other American masters at 8 p.m. at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa. $15-$45. (813) 229-7827.

Get Downtown First Friday Music Series: The Tempests perform this month at this downtown event with music and food. Festivities between Second and Third streets on Central Avenue begin at 5:30 p.m. in downtown St. Petersburg. Free. (727) 393-3597.

Florida's Largest Home Show: The Tampa Convention Center hosts more than 900 exhibits where guests can talk to experts and find ways to organize, remodel, refurbish and landscape their homes. Doors open at 11 a.m. at 333 S Franklin St. in Tampa. $8, $7 seniors, 12 and younger free. (813) 677-6925.
