Sanding Ovations Master Sand Sculpting Competition: Building starts this morning for the annual competition that invites master sand sculptors to build works of art using 150 tons of sand. The festival runs through Sunday at Bilmar Beach Resort, 10650 Gulf Blvd., Treasure Island. Free; $10 beach parking. Tonight at 7 p.m. there's a party in the Crystal Sands Ballroom at the resort to meet the sculptors and sample beers from Great Bay. $5. (727) 547-4575, ext. 237.

Cirque du Soleil's Kooza: Cirque du Soleil brings its traveling Grand Chapiteau back to St. Petersburg for this circus-themed story of a loner. The show uses traditional circus elements like clowns and acrobatics. It's at 7:30 p.m. at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. $43.50-$143.50 adults; $33-$104.50 ages 2-12. Toll-free 1-800-450-1480. Italian entertainment company Cirque Italia has also set up their touring big top on the property adjacent to MOSI for Act XII, featuring aerial acts, hand-balancing acts and contortionists.
