Things to do in Tampa Bay for Sept. 3

Gecko Fest: This street festival is always a hoot, with gaudy hats, parasols and a walking parade. It's Mardi Gras meets Mayberry to say goodbye to summer. Dance to live music on two main stages starting at 10 a.m. and it all ends with the famous Street Dance at 8 p.m. along Beach Boulevard in Gulfport.

USS Independence warship tours: The tour tickets were all snapped up, but you can at least see the warship docked in St. Petersburg's port for the weekend. The 418-foot ship can be seen from Bay Vista Park, the top of the St. Petersburg Pier and Poynter Park, at 1000 Third St. S.

Rockstar Uproar Festival: This alternative metal and rock festival features headliners Avenged Sevenfold, Three Days Grace, Seether, Bullet For My Valentine, Sevendust and more at 2 p.m. at 1-800-ASK-GARY Amphitheatre, Tampa. $19-$79.

Rick Springfield: The '80s star will be performing his hits and is joined by Starship featuring Mickey Thomas at 7:30 p.m. at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. $49.75-$100.

Brian McKnight: The R&B crooner will be steaming up the Straz Center in Tampa at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $39.50. (813) 229-7827.

KIDS AND FAMILY

Westshore Plaza play area reopening: The first 300 kids at the grand reopening today of the mall play area will get goody bags. There are also prizes and giveaways starting at 11 a.m. at the Tampa mall. Free.

MOSI admission deal: The science museum is offering buy-one, get-one free specials on admission today through Monday at 4801 E Fowler Ave., Tampa. $20.95 adults (13-59), $16.95 child (2-12), $18.95 seniors.

Game Time: Tackling the Past, 8 p.m., NBC: In this made-for-TV movie, a football star returns home to reconnect with his family.

Doctor Who, 9 p.m., BBC America: Parents, under what circumstances would you let a strange British man hang out in your little boy's bedroom? Maybe if he was there to exterminate the monsters in his closet. Maybe.
