Things to do in Tampa Bay for the week of July 9

Red Bull Wake Open: Some of the best wakeboarders on the planet will compete Friday and Saturday at the Tampa Convention Center. Think of it like water skiing on a small surfboard, but with ramps, twists and lots of big air. It also will be shown live Saturday on NBC. Free to watch.

Yappy Hour at the Baseball Game: Expect a lot of hot dogs (the furry kind) at the Christmas in July costume contest Wednesday at Frenchy's Tiki Bar at Bright House Field in Clearwater, when the Threshers take on the Fort Myers Miracle. $5-$9.50 humans, $5 dogs. Bring item for pet toy drive.

Sharks of Tampa Bay: Learn the real story about local sharks and their behaviors, along with some shark etiquette, Thursday at Tradewinds Sandpiper Resort in St. Pete Beach. Free. (727) 512-4914.

Mayhem Festival: The annual heavy metal rockfest (like the Warped Tour for metal heads) brings Slipknot, Slayer, Anthrax, Motor­head and more Friday to the 1-800-Ask-Gary Amphitheatre in Tampa. $25.50-$64.50. (813) 740-2446.

Singin' in the Rain: What a glorious feeling to see the 1952 musical starring Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor on the big screen for its 60th anniversary Thursday at Park Place Stadium 16 in Pinellas Park, Hyde Park Cinebistro, Citrus Stadium 20 in Tampa, Regency 20 in Brandon and Grove 16 in Wesley Chapel. $12.50.

Rays Summer Concert Series with Train: The pop rockers have a number of catchy singles, from Drops of Jupiter to Hey, Soul Sister and Drive By. Concert is included in ticket for Rays game against the Boston Red Sox on Friday at the Trop. Fans get a free Burst Koozie. (888) 326-7297

Tyler Hilton: See the singer-songwriter with the warm, scratchy voice in an intimate venue while you can Wednesday at Orpheum in Ybor City. $10-$12.

Kids and family

Summer Savings Nights at the Aquarium: Cool off at the Florida Aquarium in Tampa, with half-off admission after 5 p.m. and extended hours until 8 p.m. Thursday. Explore a Shore water adventure closes at dusk. Regular admission: $21.95, $16.95 children under 12, 2 and under free.

Extreme Mud Wars: This wildly popular day of rolling in a mud pit and slinging dirt returns to Spa Beach in St. Petersburg, this time for two days and with a beer tent. Team spots are sold out Saturday and Sunday, but you can still watch. (877) 820-2582.
