Things to do in Tampa Bay for the week of May 21-27

Cuban Sandwich Festival: There's been a lot of smack talk lately between Tampa and Miami over who owns the "true" Cuban sandwich. Maybe Saturday's friendly competition in Ybor's Centennial Park will settle it, with lots of local entries and one brave South Florida contender: Hialeah's Cuban Guys. Also food, music and kids zone. Free. (813) 407-6866.

An Evening with Dave Barry: The Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist has a strategy for "Laughing Your Way Through the Presidential Campaign" at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg. $50, $125 dinner and reserved seating. (727) 553-4231.

97X Backyard BBQ: A full day of bands, beer and barbecue, along with volleyball and corn toss tournaments, Saturday in St. Petersburg's Vinoy Park. Lineup includes the Used, Civil Twilight, Middle Class Rut, Falling in Reverse, Foxy Shazam and Imagine Dragons. Free admission, but ticket is required. Visit 97xonline.com/backyard-bbq.

Kids and Family

Oldsmar Freedom Fest: The holiday is next Monday, but this festival gets started this weekend. Two stages of live music, wing-eating and stein-holding contests, a kids carnival and a Memorial Day ceremony in Veteran's Park from Friday through Sunday. Free. For more Memorial Day events, visit tampabay.com/things-to-do.

Screen on the Green: A new outdoor movie series at Curtis Hixon Park in Tampa. Kung Fu Panda 2 is the feature Friday, with short animations before the film. Starts at dusk. Free. (813) 274-7723.

Summer Safari Night: This annual summer series kicks off Saturday, featuring free rides after 5 p.m., special animal encounters and live music at Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa. Included with zoo admission. (813) 935-8552.

Date Night

Florida Orchestra: Beethoven's Eroica: Beethoven's third symphony is a grand way to end the orchestra's season. The program also includes Ravel's Piano Concerto in G Major, with pianist Martina Filjak, and Chabrier's Habanera. Shows are Friday at the Straz Center in Tampa and Saturday at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. Bonus: a preconcert conversation one hour before each show. $15-$45. (727) 892-3337.

Van Wilson: The three brothers — actor Patrick Wilson, TV reporter Mark Wilson and local advertising honcho Paul Wilson — play a concert for Paws for Patriots on Saturday at the State Theatre in St. Petersburg. $20-$25. (727) 895-3045.
