Things to do in Tampa Bay for week of Nov. 1

Opus: Who knew the story of a string quartet could be so juicy? This intimate look at the people behind the chamber music is American Stage's new production in St. Petersburg. Previews start Tuesday, and it opens at 8 p.m. Friday. $29-$50. (727) 823-7529. americanstage.org.

Ybor Jazz Festival: This inaugural event runs Wednesday through Sunday with a lineup that vows to be true jazz: Denise Moore and Then Some, Valerie Gillespie Trio, above, the Jim Morey Band, Dan McMillion Jazz Orchestra. Art Harvest: More than 200 artists from near and far made the cut for this venerable show, now in its 47th year, in Highlander Park in Dunedin. It runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Free, but $3-$5 parking.

Date Night

Hanson: The teenybopper heartthrobs are all grown up. Show is 7 p.m. Friday at State Theatre in St. Petersburg. $25. (727) 895-3045.

Levon Helm and Ray LaMontagne: The drummer and vocalist for the Band and the singer-songwriter team up for an evening of folk/R&B/rock at 7 p.m. Friday at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. $39.50-$69.50. (727) 791-7400.

D.L. Hughley: One of the Original Kings of Comedy, he recently did a guest spot on Hawaii 5-0 and pops up on serious news shows, too. He has five shows Friday through Sunday at the Improv in Tampa. $27. (813) 864-4000.

Florida Orchestra: Performs Symphony No. 6 by Gustav Mahler, who has become as popular as Beethoven. Concerts are 8 p.m. Friday at Straz Center, Tampa; 8 p.m. Saturday at Mahaffey Theater, St. Petersburg; and 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater. $20-$67, with student tickets for $10. Free Tuesdays at Glazer Children's Museum: The new museum that gives your kids plenty to climb on, slide down and think about is free from 4 to 8 p.m. the first Tuesday of every month through March. Sponsored by Target. It's at 110 W Gasparilla Plaza, Tampa.
