To do today

Tampa Bay Rays They said it couldn't be done, but have you looked at the AL East standings lately? The Rays play the Toronto Blue Jays tonight at 7:10 to try to stay on top. Tickets start at $9 advance, $11 at door. Toll-free 1-888-326-7297.

BK Jackson CD Release Party Jackson performs songs from his new CD On the Move at this free party at The Venue. This rising local talent opened for Peter Frampton last year at Taste of Pinellas and is a favorite of smooth-jazz lovers. The party starts at 6 tonight at The Venue, 2675 Ulmerton Road, St. Petersburg. Free. (727) 571-2222.

Chris Porter We loved this curly-headed hoot on Last Comic Standing 4. But he was far too edgy for the mainstream voters, who ended up picking the guy with cerebral palsy that year. Or maybe it was his jokes about drugs and condoms. He performs at 8 tonight through Sunday at the Improv at Centro Ybor, 1600 E Eighth Ave., Tampa. $14-$15. (813) 864-4000.

Live Music Series Get through Hump Day with this free music gathering featuring De Lei'ed Parrots at Hyde Park Village. Proceeds from drink sales benefit Keep Hillsborough County Beautiful. It runs 6 to 9 p.m. at 742 S Village Circle in Tampa.

Pretty Paul Parsons This comic claims to have been kicked off-stage at a biker bar for being too offensive, so consider yourself warned. The show is at 8:30 tonight at Side Splitters Comedy Club, 12938 N Dale Mabry Highway, Tampa. $10-$14. (813) 960-1197.

Coming up

Kenny Chesney The outrageously popular country singer will be on stage Friday at the Ford Amphitheatre, Interstate 4 at U.S. 301 N, Tampa. $41.75-$80. (813) 740-2446.

Book Time at Brooker Creek Story time comes alive at the free gathering Thursday with a reading of Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf at the nature preserve's Environmental Education Center at 3940 Keystone Road, Tarpon Springs. The book, by Lois Ehlert, follows the life of a sugar maple from seed to beautiful tree, in collage-style art. The program also includes a craft, game or other hands-on activity related to the story. It's free, but registration is required at (727) 453-6800. It runs from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.

Matt Pryor (above) The former guitar player and singer for The Get Up Kids has released his first solo album, Confidence Man, which is a quieter, more acoustic sound than fans are used to from the emo darling. See him tonight at 7 at the Orpheum, 1902 Republica de Cuba Ave., Ybor City. $10-$12. (813) 248-9500.
