What to do today
Matt Hires CD release party: One of Tampa Bay's most engaging young singer-songwriters, the barefoot and fedora-clad Hires celebrates the release of his debut EP, Live From The Hotel Cafe. Strumming the guitar his father passed on to his son, Hires' sound is a little bit Dylan, Wilco and Ryan Adams. Catch this rising star before he heads off for a tour of the West Coast. 9 p.m. New World Brewery, 1313 E Eighth Ave., Ybor City. $6. (813) 248-4969.
Rich Guzzi XXX Hypnosis: You don't need to be psychic to guess what this hypnotist show is all about. You might not remember what you do on stage, but your friends will never let you forget. The raunchy hijinks are fun, but Guzzi puts his powers to good use as well, with a self-help portion of the show. Then again, if you start squawking like a chicken every time someone says your name, don't blame us. 8 p.m. today Improv Comedy Theater, 1600 E Eighth Ave., Tampa. $12. (813) 864-4000. tampaimprov.com.
The Rocket Summer: This "band" is really all about Bryce Avary. The stringy-haired 25-year-old indie rocker writes and records all the songs alone in the studio, then tours with a backing band. Though not overtly Christian, you won't find yourself questioning your very existence like you might after some emo/indie rock shows. Avary is known for his positive vibe, something we could all use these days. 6:30 p.m. Jannus Landing, 16 Second St. N, St. Petersburg. $15 advance, $17 day of show. (727) 896-2276. therocketsummer.com.
