Looking to work up a sweat? The official shake your booty day is Saturday. Makers of Fox TV's So You Think You Can Dance created National Dance Day last year to promote healthy living through the power of dance. Here are some events happening this weekend.
Dance day at UT
Jennifer Rosoff of the Creative Dance Movement Company is hosting a day of free dance classes from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday at the University of Tampa. Rosoff was the feet behind the successful public dance installation at this year's Lights on Tampa. Pick. Choose from beginner ballet and salsa classes to advanced hip‑hop and jazz. Classes start on the hour and last 55 minutes. For a schedule, go to creativemovementcompany.com. Classes will be held at UT's Edison Building, 214 N Boulevard, Tampa. No dance shoes or attire required.
Dance studio party
The Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Palm Harbor led last year's local festivities with a dance party and is doing it again this year. The studio at 34930 U.S. 19 N is offering free individual classes from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., the studio will break dancers into beginner, intermediate and advanced levels to perform So You Think You Can Dance's routines for National Dance Day. The dance party will start at 7 p.m. followed by a ballroom dance competition from 9 to 11 p.m. The winner will earn $500 worth of studio classes. All events are free. Call (727) 786-2224 to reserve a private class or go to arthurmurraypalmharbor.com.
Busch Gardens will host a freestyle dance competition featuring previous winners of its Summer Nights Dance Challenge. The audience will pick the ultimate champ. The competition is at 8:30 p.m. in Gwazi Park, before the Kinetix dance show. For more info on the park's dancers, see buschgardenstampablog.com.
