'Wheel of Fortune' tryouts coming to St. Petersburg

The Wheel of Fortune "Wheelmobile" rolls into the Mahaffey Theater Dec. 9-10 in search of contestants for the popular game show.

The Wheelmobile is a 39-foot Winnebago that tours the nation in search of contestants for the game show. It is equipped with a stage, puzzle board, prizes and a professional host and hostess. During the event, they will put on six one-hour shows during which contestants will play a number of mini-games.

Contestants will have a chance to win prizes and qualify for the final Wheel of Fortune auditions. Those who attend the event but are not selected to participate in the mini-games on stage will have an opportunity to qualify for the final auditions by dropping off their applications.

Auditions on Dec. 9 will be from 2 to 6 p.m., with doors opening at noon, at the Mahaffey Theater, 400 First Street South, St. Petersburg. On Dec. 10, auditions run from 5 to 9 p.m., with doors opening at 3 p.m.

There's no need to camp out, organizers say, because everyone there will be given an application.

Organizers will begin handing out applications one hour before each show begins. On Sunday, shows will begin at 2 p.m., 3:30, and 5 p.m. On Monday, shows will begin at 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., with each show lasting about an hour.

Here's how it works:

There are three Wheel of Fortune shows each day. Applicants will receive a color-coded application that tells them what time the game they are eligible for will begin.

Just before show time, they will put all the applications in a big golden drum that sits on the stage and the host will pick applications at random from the drum and call participants up to the stage in groups of five to play the game.

On stage, they will do a brief interview with each contestant and play a Wheel of Fortune mini game.

This is a casting call, so they will be looking for good game players who are energetic, enthusiastic and fun.

After the Wheelmobile leaves, potential candidates for the show will be picked to take part in a final round of auditions a few months later, also in the Tampa Bay area.

You must be at least 18. You can read all the rules for eligibility at themahaffey.com/show/Wheel-of-Fortune/188.

The show airs locally at 7 p.m. on WTSP Ch. 10.
