This is the season to just say no to the mundane and spark up your beauty routine with all that glitters, from show-stopping nail lacquers to eye-popping shadow palettes.
Flirtin' with gold
Flirt Cosmetics, available exclusively at Kohl's stores and online at kohls.com, has a limited-edition, party-ready eye shadow palette ideal to get you glittering. The Flowerific Limited Edition Eyeshadow Palette ($12.99) is a four-shadow palette that includes gleaming hues such as Gold Envy, Golden Lady, Solid Gold and Cocoa Luster. Plus, the step-by-step instructions for creating holiday sparkle, courtesy of Flirt, make applying the shadow easy as 1-2-3-4.
Step 1: Swipe Gold Envy across the entire lid from lash line to brow bone. Step 2: Apply Cocoa Luster only in the crease of eyelids. Step 3: Apply Cocoa Luster with a thin, fine-tipped shadow brush (such as EcoTools' Eye Liner Brush, $3.99 at local drugstores) to upper lash line. Step 4: Use Solid Gold and your fine-tipped shadow brush to line lower lash line and inner corner of eye (be sure to wipe brush clean with a tissue before changing colors).
Sweetness for your lips
Estee Lauder's Pure Color Gloss promises to do more than simply add shine to your lips thanks to their "True Vision technology." True Vision is akin to high definition for makeup, meaning shades look as crystal clear on you as they do in the package. Go golden this holiday with Pure Gloss in Wild Sugarcane, a shimmering bronze. Get it for $20 at local Nordstrom stores or online at esteelauder.com.
Still hungering for more sparkle? Pick up Lauder's "Glamour is Golden" holiday gift online or in stores. The set, said to be a $340 value, is $55 with any Estee Lauder fragrance purchase and includes a gold travel case, cosmetic case, mascara, four lipsticks, three eye pencils, eye makeup remover, quad blush compact, an 18-color eyeshadow compact and four brushes.
Beauty goes burlesque
Late last week, I was nearly blinded by the sparkle emanating from a package of polishes that arrived courtesy of OPI and its new collection, Burlesque.
I picked two shining new hues, "The Show Must Go On," a ruby red, and "Glow Up Already," a golden glitter fest, and headed to a favorite local spa. Somewhere between cuticle trimming and paraffin, I joked to my manicurist that after I left, I'd be followed by 8-year-old girls, who would no doubt envy my dazzling tips.
Actually, the biggest fan of my new manicure was me; I was fascinated by the way the sunlight captured the glitter in the polish, as if miniscule specks of diamonds adorned my fingernails. As my manicurist oohed and ahhed, a few of the spa's clients stopped and stared. Yup, these colors get noticed.
The only downside? Between my eyelash extensions and my glittery manicure, there may be a chorus line somewhere calling my name. Is it too much? Heck no! In the wise words, er, hues, of Burlesque from OPI, "Bring on the Bling."
