I'm infatuated with fall. It all started with the packages of pumpkin-scented beauty products I recently reviewed. Or perhaps my obsession was brought on by the pumpkin waffles the country club in my neighborhood serves up at Sunday brunch. (Although, wait, I don't eat those since they're surely full of the white sugar and white flour my trainer insists I eschew.)
Whatever the reason, this hankering for all things autumn — think camel coats and thigh-high boots — can be an awkward bed partner for sunny Florida days. No need to worry, dolls, a quick trip to your favorite salon or a D.I.Y. home manicure is all one needs to embrace fall's hautest trends from talons to toes.
Pumpkin-hued, Asian inspired
Head to your favorite local nail spot and opt for a pumpkin orange manicure in one of my new favorite hues. Reminiscent of falling leaves and pumpkin patches, OPI's "Chop-sticking to My Story" from the Hong Kong Collection may be inspired by the whisperings of the Eastern world, but it just screams autumn. Shop the OPI Hong Kong collection and other new collections at local salons and online at opi.com.
Drugstore hues to have and hold
I have a penchant for overpriced shoes and I don't own a thing from Forever 21. It's not that I don't want to — my girlfriends always seem to sport adorable finds from XXI — but I'm never that fortunate. Just my luck, I seem to be the type who only unearths flattering dresses at net-a-porter.com.
So imagine my joy — no, sheer delight — when I discovered a $2.50 drugstore fall beauty find right under my decidedly un-practical nose. It's a nail polish brand called Sinful Colors, and it's available at most local drugstores for just over two bucks. The colors are sparkly, long-lasting, shine-inducing shades of scarlet, gold, fuchsia and beyond. Like the "Darkar Copper," an of-the-moment metallic copper that screams "runway" at real world pricing.
Season of sparkle
You may recall, I was "Minxed" a few weeks back. And since I loved the metallic look of Minx, I set out to find a fall polish that afforded the shimmer and sparkle of the Minx in-salon treatment. My Minx gone — I had to have it removed in the interest of testing new lacquers — I wasn't quite ready to quit sparkling.
Thankfully, I found "Rage" from Orly, a DBP-free, rose gold foil lacquer with shine to spare. It looks as if my fingernails are dripping in champagne. You can find Orly's metallic Foil FX collection at Sally Beauty Supply stores for $5.99.
I've dished about pink, purple and red lips for fall, and that left me yearning for tips that followed suit.
As if on cue, a package arrived from Perfect Formula containing a selection of Perfect Color lacquers in purples, grays and berries. Perfect Color nail polishes are all Toluene, Formaldehyde, and Dibutyl Phthalate free, of course, and the thick brush makes for easy, even application. This week, I'm opting for Deco ($15 at qvc.com), a deep, dark berry that I've fallen in love with.
