It's Memorial Day weekend, which hopefully means backyard barbecues, sunny days beachside and jaunts down Bayshore.
But sun exposure, humidity and heat can threaten skin, hair and makeup with a major Memorial Day meltdown. Beat the heat with these easy steps to staying flawlessly chic and protected this holiday.
Applying sun protection should already be on your daily to-do list, but as the season heats up, protecting skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays becomes even more crucial and challenging. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends generously applying a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher daily, and re-applying every two hours. I like up & up's Sport Broad Spectrum SPF 30 ($5.24) and Kids' Broad Spectrum SPF 50, ($5.79), spray-on sunscreens readily available at your local Target.
Another SPF to try is Mustela's Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen Lotion($22), recently awarded the Melanoma International Foundation's Seal of Approval for effective broad spectrum protection. Plus, all Mustela products are free of parabens, phthalates and phenoxyethanol making them ideal for adults and children.
Makeup beats the heat
As temperatures rise, humidity and heat can really destroy makeup. That's not the case with Make Up Forever's Aqua line, a collection specifically designed to stand up to humidity and water. The line features eyeliners, eye shadows, blush, lipstick and more, all of which lasts through surf, sand and sun. The Aqua collection includes one of my favorite products, their "Face and Body Liquid Makeup" which actually evens my complexion and leaves a thin layer of powder atop skin for a natural finish.
And Aqua Rouge is a staple in my makeup bag year-round because it is a long-lasting liquid lipstick that truly stays put for hours upon hours and never looks cakey or cracked. As a fringe benefit, its long-lasting formula is actually waterproof and heat- and humidity-resistant. The Make Up Forever Aqua line is available at Sephora locations.
The key to beating humidity and heat when it comes to hair is sealing the hair cuticle to banish frizz and dehydration. Moroccanoil has become a mainstay of many of hair-care experts because it calls upon silicone to seal the cuticle and smooth locks. Moroccanoil's Frizz Control ($16.99 for 3.4 ounces at salons) is a beachside must thanks to a weightless formula that fights frizz no matter the temperature or weather conditions. So while Mother Nature may choose to rain on your Memorial Day parade, you can still enjoy the weekend beautifully.
