Feb. 5 is National Wear Red Day, when many will don little red dresses in support of American Heart Month. But if your budget doesn't allow for picking out an impromptu LRD — because you're either out of cash or out of time — I've rounded up some beauty faves, from lipsticks to lacquers, that make wearing red oh-so-doable.
Lady in red
On the first Friday of each February, Americans show their support for women's heart disease awareness by wearing red … but red's not your color. Not to worry, dolls, I've rounded up a list of wearable red lacquers to keep close at hand.
Np2 Nail Perfection's nail lacquer in Solar pairs a professional, durable nail polish and an effective nail treatment/quick-dry top coat in one chic package ($22.50 at np2beauty.com). Plus, the company is donating 10 percent of all sales of red nail polish to the American Heart Association during February.
I also love Chanel's Coromandel No. 473, a true red that is undeniably sexy and goes on gorgeous with just one coat, making it worthy of the $23 price tag.
If you're loyal to red, a polish that costs upward of $20 may be a good investment, but if you like to experiment with color, opt for the much more affordable, but no less sizzling, red from OPI called I'm Not Really A Waitress; about $8 at local spas and salons.
And if you're not really a manicure expert, head over to my Web site, prettycity.com/love. Each February we partner with The Heart Truth for a pampering campaign called "Love You," reminding women everywhere to take charge of their own heart health and to treat themselves. All February long, pampering services — think manicures, microderms and more — are deeply discounted at Tampa Bay salons and spas who participate in the campaign.
For less than $6 you can sport red today, so muster up some courage, hit up your local Walgreens, and tell yourself that you too can wear red lipstick.
I found the perfect red in Rimmel's 1000 Kisses Stay On Lip Liner Pencil in Red Dynamite and Lasting Finish Lipstick in Alarm ($5.26 for the pair).
The lipstick glides on easily and keeps its commitment to stay on lips without straying. Like you, this glamorous duo aims to prove that style can be a steal.
'Til death do you part
The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology published a study in 2008 demonstrating that the "color red makes men feel more amorous toward women. And men are unaware of the role the color plays in their attraction."
True or false, one thing is for sure, you've already found your soul mate … and that's you. And you're too smart to be caught unaware. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women. Log on to goredforwomen.org to discover how, through healthy diet, physical activity and stress reduction, you too can live happily ever after.
