As Britney Spears' wins at this week's VMAs proves, everybody loves a comeback. And being a celebrity, with a host of stylists, trainers and makeup artists perfecting one's every look, isn't absolute insurance against style missteps. (Cue, Spears!) So if money, power and box-office appeal can't protect celebrities from making beauty mistakes, what can the rest of us do? Why learn from their mistakes, of course. This week, I've gathered the top looks that left us breathless and those that left us declaring, "Oh, no, she didn't!" Sometimes it's not what you do, it's what you don't. Thanks for the lessons, Brit.
The A-lister: Jennifer Lopez
The lesson: Keep it simple, starlet!
The looks: J.Lo's curls-gone-wild look doesn't flatter her heart-shaped face; it screams overstyled. Plus the flatness at the crown of the head paired with the fullness of the curls on the side creates an off-balance look that is far from flattering. Reminding us that simple can be devastatingly sexy, Lopez hits the hair on the head with the soft, sleek look she sported in 2007. The A-lister: Kate Beckinsale
The lesson: Even on a bombshell, messy is just plain messy.
The looks: Kate sported this unkempt 'do recently on the red carpet — proving, as I've been shouting for years, that messy isn't modern; it's just messy. Nix the undone hair and the rat-tail ponytails once and for all, ladies. Don't confuse an undone 'do with a tousled, romantic look which Beckinsale got oh-so-right at right.
The A-lister: Vivica A. Fox
The lesson: Curl, don't crimp.
The looks: Celebrities such as Vivica Fox and Tyra Banks are trying to reinvent the crimped look, but this is one style we don't want to see make a comeback. When the eternally gorgeous Fox can look this bad in a 'do, you know it's a don't! Put the crimping iron away and opt for a sophisticated curl that is both modern and classic, like the style Fox wears at right.
The A-lister: Britney Spears
The lesson: No style mistake is deadly.
The looks: Let's face it, we all miss a beat once in a while. Whether you're trying too hard to be chic or you just utterly forget anyone is watching, no one style mistake will be your undoing. So put that horrid hair behind you, and trust that if Britney Spears can reinvent herself, you, too, can take your look from unappealing to award-winning.
