New BB creams, tried and tested

If you value healthy skin and want to avoid sun damage, it's time to get on board with daily use of a BB cream or beauty balm.

When beauty balms first hit the market, I tried and tested available brands and rounded up my most (and least) favorite BB creams. That was more than a year ago, and a lot has changed. Pantene launched a beauty balm for hair. L'oreal launched a beauty balm for aging skin. And I, of course, put them all to the test for this week's roundup of the latest, greatest and a few not-so-hot new beauty balm brands on the market.

Love it! Instant Perfecting B.B. Cream from Dr. Lewinn by Kinerase, SPF 15

Dr. Lewinn by Kinerase is an affordable alternative to the highly regarded, and much pricier, Kinerase line. Instant Perfecting B.B. Cream is an all-in-one-balm that perfects, hydrates and protects skin with SPF 15. It is suited to all skin types, delivering sheer, natural coverage that blends well and doesn't feel sticky like some BB creams do. It's non-comedogenic, paraben-free and hypoallergenic and promises to reduce fine lines, wrinkles and blemishes while instantly brightening skin. And, the price is right: Instant Perfecting B.B. Cream sells for $15.97 at Walmart stores (not available at

Leave it: Cover Girl CG Smoothers BB cream, SPF 15

If you're after a hydrator with some SPF, this product may be for you. But those who want any type of coverage or skin perfecting benefits in a BB cream, save the $6 that it costs to pick up Cover Girl's new BB Cream. True, the price may be right, but there are far too few benefits to using this cream and the complete lack of coverage is a big letdown. Leave it at the drugstore.

Love it! Clinique Age Defense BB cream, SPF 30

Ideal for fair women, Clinique's BB cream comes in a variety of hues but really seems to be winning over those with light or pink toned skin. Coverage is light (which is very different from non-existent) and the formula is not greasy at all making it a big hit for those who have acne-prone skin. With an SPF rating of 30, this double-duty product is ideal for days when skin needs to look luminous without being overly made up. Clinique Age Defense BB cream also serves as a great primer for days when additional coverage is needed; use it as a base before applying other products such as foundation and powder. Get it for about $37 at local department stores or online at

Love it! Revlon Photoready BB Cream Skin Perfector, SPF 30

Not well-suited to those with oily skin, Revlon's Photoready BB cream is a solid product that sells for $8 to $9 at local drugstores. It offers up light coverage and a host of ingredients with some genuine skin health benefits such as licorice root and cucumber extract to soothe skin. Revlon Photoready BB Cream Skin Perfector boasts a broad-spectrum SPF protection of 30 and a fragrance-free formula.
