It's summer, which means you're busy pondering whether to apply sunscreen or sunblock. Not to mention other difficult choices such as margarita versus daiquiri. That's why this week I've rounded up complete looks — think hair, makeup and clothes — to make nailing summer style simply effortless.
The whole she-bang
Those with straight or wavy hair can opt for a hairstyle that has become a timeless staple: eye-skimming fringe. Celebs like Taylor Swift, Emma Stone and Zooey Deschanel have been caught on camera sporting this 'do, which pairs best with eye makeup that really pops. Choose from summer's brightly hued eye-liners — emerald, turquoise and purple — or go dramatic with smoky eyes. Whatever makeup you choose, be sure to pin hair back while applying cosmetics, as that's the best way to avoid getting mascara on your bangs while perfecting eye makeup. Choose smoky eyes and red lips for a retro, pin-up effect. Or celebrate your independent style, and Independence Day, like a rock star by coordinating this edgy hairdo with nude lips, brightly colored lids, a basic tank top, accessories from Target's just-launched Feed collection (feeding hungry families) and Rock & Republic's patriotic Lolita Stars & Stripes Denim Shorts, $58 at Kohl's.
Those who want to spotlight their great bone structure will love that sleek, slick-backed hair is a hot trend this season. Not to mention that this is one 'do that's essentially humidity-proof. One caveat: Slicked-back hair can go quickly from sleek and chic to greasy and gross. Be sure not to overapply hair products; we're aiming for a just-out-of-the-pool sheen, not a haven't-showered-for-days disaster. A product I like to achieve the sleek, wet look is Phyto Pro Wet Gel ($24).
Highlight great bone structure by wearing slick locks with makeup that focuses on cheek bones. Shade, bronze and highlight to really focus on that pretty face of yours. Apply Mac's sculpting powder, Mac Taupe, sparingly to create a long downward triangle in the hollow of the cheek to shade cheeks. Next, get glowing by applying bronzer in circular patterns over cheekbones, blending up toward your temples. Finally, apply a touch of highlighter to the highest part of your cheekbones. Complement this hair and makeup look with a menswear-inspired outfit such as skinny jeans, heels and a body-conscious blazer.
Forget teasing. Definitely ditch the Bumpits. There's a better updo this summer and it's completely free of the hair poof many a smart woman has succumbed to. Create a youthful-looking braided tiara, a la Scarlett Johansson, with either your own hair or faux hair. This look can be paired with a complete updo or with hair worn half up and half down. And for those whose hair is too thin to braid well or for those who just haven't mastered the DIY tiara braid, store-bought options abound. Sally Beauty stores offer DWTS Bellissima Braided Headband for $10 while a brand called "Braidies," sold online at tonytail.com, serves up faux braids in half- or quarter-inch thickness options for $9 each. The braided tiara complements romantic summer sundresses, glowing skin and glossy lips perfectly.
