Forget campfires and canoeing, it's time for summer beauty camp. We've traded bonfires for sizzling sparkle via jewelry that doubles as makeup. There are no bears or fishing here, but a certain mouse insists you work with your hands. We've traded hair-raising horror stories told around the fire for hair-smoothing collections that say a lot about the art of traveling in style, and we've gleaned good "scents" from across the pond.
Sparkle belonged to jewelry long before it belonged to lip gloss, which is why it makes perfect sense that Swarovski launched a beauty collection. Aura By Swarovski, sold at HSN.com and swarovskibeauty.com, features a fragrance ($90), a perfume concentrate ($59.90), a highlighter ($59.90), two glosses (each $59.90), and six lip colors (each $24.90). My pick, the Rose Lip Gloss Pendant is a piece of jewelry that hides an ultra-sparkling gloss within thanks in part to micronized crystals housed in a pendant with a mirrored back that dangles from a 35-inch cord.
A mousy must
Some aspire to emulate the likes of Audrey Hepburn, known for being the picture of chic. Others prefer to ooze sex appeal, a la Marilyn Monroe. And then there is Minnie Mouse, who has inspired everything from a clothing collection by Forever 21 to jewelry and beyond, including the latest Minnie-inspired line, "Couture De Minnie," five OPI nail lacquers released this summer.
Colors in the collection include A Definite Moust-Have, a hot pink creme with a touch of pearl; Chic From Ears To Tail, a bubblegum pink; Minnie Mighty Bow, a scarlet shimmer; Magazine Cover Mouse, a red liquid sand textured lacquer; and Minnie Style, a glitter top coat with a clear base. Get the collection at local salons as well as Ulta locations.
This season, John Frieda Hair Care called upon one of my favorite designers, Rachel Roy, to create limited-edition cosmetic cases housing travel sized Frizz-Ease products. The mini sets, which sell for $38 at RachelRoy.com, come stocked with six frizz-fighting essentials in a chic cosmetic bag created exclusively for this summer hair styling collection. The bags themselves are inspired by John Frieda's British heritage and incorporate iconic imagery. Head to RachelRoy.com to be among the first to buy the bag and its included beauty products but bear in mind that you won't be frizz-free immediately; the collection is currently pre-selling with a July 26 ship date.
It's been a busy season for Stella McCartney. She kicked off spring by receiving an OBE from the Queen of England for services to fashion. Then, McCartney released her latest ode to the season, a limited edition fragrance simply called "Stella Summer." The scent calls upon frosted lemon, green apple, Bulgarian rose, peony and amber, and is housed within a striped and striking fuchsia, orange and light pink color-blocked bottle. Get it before the dog days of summer slip by for $62 at Sephora locations.
