Three hot manicure looks for fall 2011, from crackle to taupe to nail tattoos

Fall's manicures are far from classic, from nail tattoos to haute new hues to polish on crack(le). This week, I've rounded up the top three ways to nail fall's chicest trends from tips to toes.

Get inked

For fall, I'm opting for a "supercool" twist on the classic mani by pairing Perfect Formula polish in Deco with Jessica's Alluring Creature and Supercool Nail Tattoos from bigRuby, above. The bigRuby nail tats are fairly easy to apply and can be used to amp up any basic mani.

Simply remove a tattoo from its backing, apply to dry nails (over polish or on a bare nail) and then hold a cotton ball dipped in water on top of the tattoo for 15 seconds. Finally, apply clear polish over the nail to "set" the tattoo. The effect is unique, yet subtle enough that I'd try it again. I think I'll experiment with a tone-on-tone effect, such as a set of gray bigRuby tattoos over a favorite slate polish. And I'll definitely take the tattoos to my favorite salon next time because, while change can be good, I never tire of getting a professional manicure.

Taupe talons

Demi Moore, Kristen Bell, Rihanna and Blake Lively have all been spotted sporting taupe, fall's new nude, on well-groomed hands.

New this season and perfectly on trend is a lacquer called "Glamour Purse" from the Fall 2011 Essie collection, above. The rich, deep taupe is so gorgeous on, it just may become my new go-to polish for fall.

Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics boasts a polish collection that is non-toxic and 3 Free (does not contain toluene, formaldehyde or dibutyl phthalate), but best of all, the colors are gorgeous, long-lasting and irreverently named. And Hangover from Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics is a totally chic shade of taupe that also nails the brown trend. Normally, hangovers aren't something one hopes to acquire, but if you indulge in too much of this uber-chic lacquer hue you're more likely to channel Gwen Stefani than Courtney Love.

Color gets crackled

You may recall that OPI started the crackle trend with the release of its Katy Perry Teenage Dream collection featuring Black Shatter, an ebony crackle. The crackle trend is in full effect, with no signs of stopping. There are now a bevy of brands and colors to choose from, including China Glaze (above), OPI Shatter Nail Polish, Sally Hansen, Mia Secret Crackle Nail Polish and Sephora by OPI Blasted Nail Colour.

I recently sported an edgy mani thanks to two coats of OPI's "Lincoln Park at Midnight" topped with China Glaze's "Crackled Concrete." An easy way to elevate your typical mani, the China Glaze Crackle collection is chic, effortless and works with any polish underneath. And, I've found that when a solid mani starts to chip, a quick crackle topcoat creates a new look and adds days to the life of your polish. Meaning this is one fall trend that's practical and pretty.
