Three spring fashion trends you probably already have in your closet

I used to get annoyed when the fashion powers that be would announce that spring's hottest "new" trends were things like florals, red lips or menswear-inspired pieces. What once irked me now excites me because, in truth, every season brings about an opportunity to reinvent looks that you may already own or have been yearning to embrace for years. Spring 2013 may be one of the most wearable yet, since the hippest looks are stylish staples with a modern twist.

Black and white

If you own something in black and white, you are already on your way to conquering spring style. Add a graphic edge, think stripes or color blocking, and you've got this season mastered. For Michael Kors, the look means graphic stripes and checkered pieces, while Alexander Wang put this contrasting concept to work in lightweight black and white leathers.

Make it modern: You probably already own the pieces, so to embrace the black and white trend for 2013, mixing and matching patterns is key. A bold black and white-stripe tee is perfectly paired with a black and white houndstooth skirt. Or opt for a classic black miniskirt paired with a classic white button-down top and abstract accessories like Yves Saint Laurent Large Cabas Chyc Tote ($2,895), or a more affordably priced black and white hobo from Guess ($73 at Macy's).

Sporty dresses

This season's sporty dresses, featuring A-line skirts and shoulder-baring tops — lend themselves well to a quick game of tennis or an impromptu round of golf. But don't typecast these frocks as casual; after all, they pair just as well with high heels and jewels as they do with sandals. At New York Fashion Week, Victoria Beckham, who no doubt has mastered feminine frocks, showed sporty dresses with gladiator style sandals (both high-heeled and kitten-heeled), belted waists and body conscious styling. Not surprisingly, Maria Sharapova sat in the front row admiring Beckham's well-received collection. Diesel Black Gold also spotlighted this look at their spring 2013 runway show where flirty tennis dresses were crafted from a variety of materials including mesh and leather.

Make it modern: These dresses are short and best paired with a shoe that covers the calf — think gladiator sandals or open-toe boots. is the place to shop if you don't own a single dress in this style and want to embrace the trend. Search "skater dresses" to find styles that pretty closely replicate the runway looks and are priced right at about $50 to $250.

Bermuda shorts

By definition, Bermuda shorts are walking shorts that hit about 1 inch above the knee. For spring, Bermuda shorts are ultra-chic, which may be a nice change from shorts that bare another kind of cheek. Designer Mara Hoffman showed Bermudas in abstract patterns and pastel hues while Alexander Wang's shorts were black, of course. Rachel Roy's Bermudas were lacy and loose while Vera Wang's shorts were slim-cut in brocade.

Make it modern: Update this look for the season by mixing styles. Pair slouchy denim Bermuda shorts with a tailored feminine blouse and heels, or pair body-conscious Bermudas with a boxy tee.
