Your Big Fat Boyfriend: How to Stay Thin When Dating a Diet Disaster

What's it about? Tricks and tips to stay thin when dating a guy who considers green stuff — e.g. vegetables — for cows.

Who's it for? The under-25 crowd — most "real life" stories sprinkled through the narrative are from 20-somethings.

We knew this: Women should shoot for 1,200 to 2,400 calories a day. For guys, it's 2,000 to 3,000 calories a day.

Worth the read? Hardly. The nutrition information is slim and sometimes contradictory. Bergen rails against engineered foods but advocates for adding low-fat foods to the diet — low fat foods that are also engineered. The tone, too, that women should try to hide their eating habits from their significant others, skates close to the sexist line. Better bet for eating advice? Try Real Food by Nina Planck, or What I Weigh Today, a food blog by author and critic Joy Manning (whatiweightoday.com).
