Taste test: frozen fruit pops

With temperatures soaring and summer sizzling, we went searching for low-calorie, low-sugar frozen fruit treats. We sampled a dozen brands, trying strawberry-flavored pops whenever possible. None of the sugar-free ones were our favorites; the artificial sweetener was overpowering. Panelists preferred the bars heaviest on real fruit flavor and those with bits of strawberry. Judges' comments Judges described this full-fruit pop as "Smucker's on a stick" for its jamlike texture and strong strawberry flavor. These pops were natural looking with a creamy texture. One panelist compared the frozen bars to sorbet. These were fresh and super sweet. "Real" was the word most often used by judges to describe Winn-Dixie's store brand of strawberry bars. The flavor was sweet and refreshing. One judge said his was "grand!" Just like the name says, these pops were very fruity, but the full-bodied strawberry flavor was not overpowering. Judges liked the smooth texture and the darker color of these Whole Fruit bars as well as the sweet taste.
