Taste test: low-fat, low-calorie strawberry yogurt

Plenty of lunch boxes are packed with tiny yogurt containers these days, and for good reasons. They are low-fat, low-calorie and, as our tasters discovered, pretty tasty. We tried six popular brands of strawberry-flavored, artificially sweetened yogurts with 120 calories or less and little or no fat.

Judges' comments "Sweet and sassy — it wakes up your mouth!" said one judge. Panelists liked the tiny bits of strawberry throughout the mixture. They also said the Weight Watchers yogurt was the sweetest of the samples. "It's great if you like a sugary flavor," said a judge who also preferred the clumpy consistency of the very pink snack. The Dannon yogurt was smooth, strawberry-filled and sweet. Judges were delighted that it did not have an artificial aftertaste, although one panelist said she might have to eat a lot of it to feel satisfied. Sweetbay's store brand yogurt had a nice balance of sweet and tangy to it. "It's lightly sweet with a tingling feeling on my tongue," said one judge. Panelists liked the creaminess of the Hannaford yogurt and "the pleasing, light pink color."
Shopping information 79 cents for 6 ounces at Sweetbay. 59 cents for 6 ounces at Sweetbay. 50 cents for 8 ounces at Sweetbay.
