Taste test: Strawberry sorbet

Want to keep the love in Valentine's Day in your heart and not on your waistline? Why not top off a healthy dinner with some sweet, strawberry sorbet. Our panelists were skeptical at first, but decided they would be well-satisfied with a cool dessert that includes the red and sugary themes of the day. We found four strawberry sorbets in local grocery stores, although several other brands of mixed flavors also were available.

Judges' comments This sorbet had a strong berry flavor and lots of body to it. Judges loved the creamy texture. "I like the big chunks of strawberries," said one panelist. "It's the real thing!" Another agreed, saying, "The pieces of strawberry make it a winner." A couple of judges described the strawberries in this sorbet as "happy." "Smooth" and "winning" were two words judges used to describe the popular frozen treat brand. "It looks like a deep pink Alaskan glacier," said one, calling the color "brilliant." "It's cool, yet very warm — like an interview with Ellen DeGeneres," he said. Sugar and creaminess brought out the flavor of this sorbet more than the strawberries. Some panelists said they would have preferred to see and taste more strawberries in the sorbet. But at least one said he appreciated the subtle strawberry flavor, describing the berries as "not too pushy." Strawberries in this sorbet were a bit more tart than some of the others. Judges also described the texture of the Talenti brand as "airy" rather than robust. They said the sorbet might need a bit of doctoring with fresh berries or whipped cream.
