The brass, the sass, the swing: There's something about Sinatra that sticks. Ol' Blue Eyes has been gone for 13 years now; his creative fire, and the voice that grabbed our collective lapels, has been extinguished twice as long. But with the exception of Elvis and MJ, there isn't a singer alive or dead who can touch the aura and intangibles of the Chairman.
Sinatra will outlive all of us.
Today through Sunday, the Florida Orchestra will attempt to extract the ring-a-ding magic of the immortal man they call "The One and Only Frank Sinatra," especially during his untouchable years fronting the biggest of big bands led by Tommy Dorsey.
Conductor and cornettist Jeff Tyzik will guide such jazz stalwarts as trombonist James Pugh, vocalist Steve Lippia and drummer Dave Mancini as they jet-set around the world on a Sintra-fied travelogue. These gents have their work cut out for them; Frank was the baddest cat on the planet, and copying him can go wrong in lots of ways. Just make sure the brass packs punch, the rhythm section wears comfortable shoes — and the singers don't mimic him, but merely try to get close.
We won't give away the entire setlist for this weekend's shows, but we'll give you a few tasty hints. Here are five sets of lyrics from classic cuts. Figure 'em out, and you'll know a couple of the Sinatra goodies the Florida Orchestra has in store.
