Vitals: 12950 Racetrack Road, Westchase. (813) 925-3200. Sunday through Saturday, 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. www.justonemoreattheslug.com.
The spot: The Slug is a lot like Westchase — cookie-cutter. The walls inside are made to look like brick, which gives it a downtown feel, even though it's in a plaza. The open ceiling is painted black. The two large bars wrap around the center of the room and covered in chrome. The Slug sells Marlboro and Parliament cigarettes, and smoking is permitted, but the smell wasn't noticeable. Oddly enough, the bar did smell like Dial Soap. Inside are two arcade games — bowling and golf — as well as a couple of dart boards. On Tuesday and Sunday afternoons the Slug hosts free Texas Hold'em tournaments. One thing that puts a bit of a damper on the atmosphere is a large rotating ad next to one of the 11 flat-screen TVs. It's a distraction.
The crowd: The majority of the crowd looked between the ages of 20 and 35. The atmosphere and attire may be casual, but it's obvious people — especially the women — dress to impress. The staff is a mixed. The ladies were friendly, but a couple of male tenders were rude. The Slug seems frequented mostly by locals.
Juice: The Slug has a full bar. There are more than 15 beers on tap, including Guinness, Mich Ultra, Newcastle, Bass and Strongbow. Happy Hour is 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday with nightly drink specials starting at 8. Every day there's a different drink special — Tuesdays are $2 off martinis, Wednesdays are $2 drafts and $3.25 imports and Thursdays are $6.25 Grey Goose.
Music: The jukebox offers most genres — from Alicia Keys to Pearl Jam. Every Friday, the Slug hosts live music from local bands. For a calendar of events, visit their Web site.
Grub: None, save for a popcorn machine. They do provide to-go menus of restaurants that deliver or are within walking distance.
