The Green Parrot Pub, Tampa

Vitals: 11759 N Dale Mabry Highway, Carrollwood. (813) 962-2954. 11 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily.

The spot: The Green Parrot Pub has been around for years, but new owners took over in February and the bar has gone from a dive to alive. Renovations are still in progress, but compared with the once-low ceilings, smoky atmosphere and antisocial crowd, the revived Parrot is getting better by the day. The pub is divided into three sections: a huge dining area/dance floor, a round bar equipped with gambling games and plenty of flat-screen TVs and, on the north side, a setup with four pool tables, darts and more TVs. The dining area features two large projection screens, which, unlike some, actually have clear pictures, so not only can you view your football game, you can read the score.

What's going on: Ladies night is 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tuesday (free well liquors and draft beers). Tuesdays and Thursdays are extreme poker nights. Friday is karaoke, with an 80-something-year-old man who calls himself Dancing Dan — if this isn't amusing, I don't know what is. The pub hosts live local bands on Saturdays.

Game station: While almost every sports bar I've visited has some sort of arcade game, they're all the same: Golden Tee Live and Silver Strike Bowling. The Green Parrot has these and Boxing Champion, Simpsons Ping-Pong — I haven't seen a Ping-Pong machine in a bar in ages! — Big Buck Hunter and Cruisin' World, an old-school race car game.

The crowd: I visited the Green Parrot Pub about a year ago, before I had any intention to review it, and I must say the crowd was anything but friendly. This time around, everyone at the bar was talkative and the crowd ranged from seniors to youngbloods in their 20s, all dressed casually and having a good time. The staff was more than accommodating — I didn't see the bartenders let one beer go empty before they placed another one on the bar.

Juice and grub: Happy Hour at the Green Parrot is 1 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, with dollar drafts and daily drink specials. Drafts include Yuengling, Beach Bum, Blue Moon, Amber Bock and more, plus a full liquor bar. The pub has daily lunch specials and a full menu that consists of wings, wraps, burgers, sandwiches and fried seafood. The grill is fired up everyday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Prices are cheap and the food is hot.
