Burger contests call for entries

Do you pride yourself on grilling the perfect patty? Ready to put your meat where your mouth is? Well, these contests are now taking entries:

Build a Better Burger

What: Perhaps the granddaddy of burger contests, now in its 21st year and sponsored mainly by Sutter Home Winery in Napa Valley, Calif.

Enter: Through Sept. 3. The cook-off will be held on the grounds of the winery in May.

Grand prize: $100,000.

Rules: Beef burger patties must have at least 75 percent beef (not veal). Alternative burgers (which vie for a $15,000 prize) can be made from any ground food, including some beef, but beef can't make up more than 25 percent of the patty. Enter as many burger recipes as you like. Burgers are judged on creativity, taste and visual appeal. Get details or enter at sutterhome.com.

Johnsonville

Enter: Through July 3.

Grand prize: $10,000.

Rules: Create a flavor combination with add-ons and toppings. This contest also will have online voting to determine a fan favorite finalist. Get details or enter at johnsonville.com.
