We're looking for a dozen willing cooks

Are you hoping to up your game for this year's Thanksgiving dinner?

If so, apply now for Wishbone U., our seventh annual free Thanksgiving cooking boot camp. This year's class will focus on desserts. Oh, pumpkin will figure prominently, but we'll consider some other typical harvest ingredients, too.

We are looking for people who don't know how to boil water and those who are more proficient but want to learn some new culinary tricks.

To gain admittance to the class, send a brief note about why you want to attend. We're suckers for a good story, especially when it involves heartwarming family tales or a sad recounting of gummy mashed potatoes and overcooked turkey. Nominations of bad or deserving cooks by family and friends are encouraged, but they cannot be submitted anonymously. Cooks as young as 13 will be considered.

Twelve people will be selected to attend an hands-on class at 4 p.m. Oct. 14 at Apron's Cooking School at Publix Supermarket in the Shoppes of Citrus Park in Tampa. Apron's resident chef Rich Norris will share his expertise and recipes. Then we'll eat what we've made — always the best part of the class.

Apply for admission

Tell us in 150 words or fewer why you should be selected to take part in our free Thanksgiving cooking class. Include your name, age, city and daytime phone number and send entries to Wishbone U., c/o Taste, Tampa Bay Times, P.O. Box 1121, St. Petersburg, FL 33731, or email features@tampabay.com. Put THANKSGIVING in the subject line.

The deadline is Oct. 5, and winners will be notified by Oct. 8.

Participants must be willing to be photographed during the class, because it's not just their skills we want to improve. The experience — and recipes — will be shared in Taste on Nov. 14.
