Beak's Old Florida changes hands and chef

Dan Soronen (Old Northeast Tavern, Shackleton's Folly, Brewburgers, all in St. Petersburg) has bought Beak's Old Florida in St. Petersburg's Grand Central District.

His aim: "To get it back to what (owner) Jamie (Farquharson) originally intended." He will also allow kids in the restaurant side of the establishment. It has been a 21-and-up operation.

But here's where the plot thickens. Itinerant St. Petersburg chef Domenica Macchia (Redwoods, MJ's, Diner 437, Shackleton's Folly and, most recently, Three Birds) joins the staff, charged with, as Soronen says, "revamping the whole menu." Macchia and Soronen parted ways acrimoniously at Shackleton's Folly, but Soronen says that's all water under the bridge.

"She wanted out at Three Birds," says Soronen. "I'm moving forward."

Beak's Old Florida will undergo a renovation and relaunch on Nov. 1 with Macchia in the kitchen.
