Crazy Conch closes; WineBurgers opens

Seven-year-old Crazy Conch Cafe (1110 Pinellas Bayway S, No. 206, Tierra Verde, (727) 865-0633) has just announced to its longtime customers: "The Crazy Conch Cafe is no longer a viable business endeavor. . . . While our food costs continue to soar, our guests' disposable income continues to dwindle. Mom used to say, 'If you don't bend, you break.' We've decided to bend." Crazy Conch closed last Friday, and WineBurgers opens in its place around May 1. The new concept is affordable and casual: burgers, sausages, grilled cheese, soup, milk shakes and cupcakes.

Dunkin' Donuts seeks a pastry genius

It's a "Create Dunkin's Next Donut" contest, with the grand prize winner hauling in $12,000. The winning creation will be sold in participating stores all over the country. You can't get all kooky (foie gras and guava paste, sea salt jimmies), and there are a certain number of permitted flavors, toppings, shapes, etc. The winner will be announced June 5, which is, you guessed it, National Doughnut Day.
