New restaurants open in Pinellas, but another closes

New World of Beer neighbor

Pizza impresario Peter Taylor held a soft opening on Friday for his second Wood Fired Pizza in the downtown St. Petersburg spot sandwiched between The Avenue (burgers) and World of Beer (whole lotta beer) in the 300 block of First Avenue S. The menu, at least to start, is focused: pizzas only, in roughly the same lineup as Taylor's original location on Bearss Avenue in Tampa (check out the pistachio pie with fresh rosemary) accompanied by a full bar. Pizza lovers can even order Wood Fired Pizza from atop a barstool at WOB.

One deli opens, another closes

NY Café has opened at 6630 Central Ave. in St. Petersburg. According to general manager John Spiering, the cafe features New York-style deli sandwiches priced from $4.99 to $6.99, Carvel ice cream, breakfast items (including offerings from Clearwater Bagel) and beer and wine. Guests can also check their email on the cafe's computers for free while dining. For more information, call (727) 344-2233.

The 12-year-old Pickles Plus Too will close Feb. 29 at 320 Cleveland St. in Clearwater. Owners Joey and Kim Benedettini are looking for a new location and continue to run their McMullen Booth Road location.

Drunk in love with banana bread
