The Refinery, the Seminole Heights restaurant known for its hyperlocal menu that changes every week based on what's coming from the farm, was not among the five finalists for Best New Restaurant announced Monday by the James Beard Foundation.
The Refinery was named one of 33 semifinalists for the national award last month. The award rarely goes to a restaurant outside New York City, which was the home of 10 of the past 13 winners. The finalists named Monday were ABC Kitchen and Torrisi Italian Specialties, both in New York City, Girl and the Goat in Chicago (where the chef is Top Chef season four winner Stephanie Izard), Benu in San Francisco and Menton in Boston.
Florida's only representation among the restaurant finalists was chef Zach Bell, the chef at Cafe Boulud in Palm Beach. He is a finalist for Best Chef: South.
Winners will be announced May 6 in New York.
