JoEllen Schilke, longtime owner of the Globe Coffee Lounge in St. Petersburg, is closing her doors Dec. 21.

After a 12-year run as a local fave for heady coffee and even headier arts events, Schilke will leave her post to devote herself exclusively to a full-time job with WMNF radio. She has long been the host of the Art In Your Ear program there.

The Globe has been a haven for, as Schilke describes on the lounge's My Space page, "really, really hungry, thirsty, sleepy peeps ... writers, poets, shuffleboard players, DJs, musicians and theater people, people who care, people who are so funny we wet ourselves, people who have lived a hundred lives ... people who don't throw their cigarette butts out the window, and people who turn their cars off when they are doing their recycling."

All of these people and others can bid Schilke and her Sloppy JoEllens (that's a dish, not a dig) adieu at 532 First Ave. N on Dec. 21, or on Dec. 26, Boxing Day, when Schilke will host a garage sale of restaurant equipment and furniture.

New in St. Pete Beach

At the longtime site of Mulligan's and the short-time site of Ocean Breeze, the Salty Rim Grill opened last week at 9524 Blind Pass Road in St. Pete Beach. Partners Rory Hardin and Scott Estes have redone the restaurant interior to reflect a "Cancun to Key West" theme. As Hardin describes, they've "beached it up" with teak canoes and a more casual feel, with a menu that cruises from Tex/Mex to Creole and Floribbean dishes, with a grown-up "crush bar" of slushy, juice-based cocktails. Open now for dinner only, the restaurant will introduce lunch in the new year. For more information, call (727) 851-9955.
