Heft a pint again in honor of Joey Redner's Cigar City Brewing. At the 30th annual Great American Beer Festival which concluded Saturday in Denver, the Tampa brewery brought home a gold medal for its Minaret ESB. Breweries in Florida took home five medals overall, but this amber-colored Extra Special Bitter was the state's only gold. In September, the 3-year-old brewery entered seven beers in the United State Beer Tasting Championship summer competition and received recognition for three of them, and in this month's Draft Magazine Cigar City tied for second overall in the U.S. Beer Open, with four golds and a silver medal. When asked what accounts for Cigar City's suddenly celebrated suds, Redner says, "We're beer geeks and we make beer that caters to fellow beer geeks, but we also make really approachable and sessionable beers." Sessionable? He explains that this is a term for a brew you might sit and have two or three of. Yes, we'll agree that many of Cigar City's offerings are quite sessionable.
