Move over ice cream cakes — birthday cake ice cream is what gets our votes this week. With all the political events going on locally, our panelists elected to taste confetti-filled treats from grocery store freezers. One brand was highly favored in our poll, but it is predicted many more ice cream makers will be churning out this flavor, even before the November elections.

Garnering more votes than any item sampled so far this year, PET's "Birthday Cake" ice cream won by a landslide. Judges loved the rich, vanilla ice cream and the brightly colored bits of confetti candy. All four tasted a hint of butter pecan in the flavor as well. "This is soooo delicious," said one judge. "It tastes like a Publix birthday cake." Another said, "I would serve this instead of cake." Panelists liked the blue ribbons of color swirled through the servings. "It's a party on a spoon," said one. This store-brand ice cream had a nice consistency and attractive ripples of blue coloring. Judges favored the smoothness of this candidate. "Wow! This tastes like an actual cake, proving you can have no cake and eat it too," said one judge. "I love the crunchy bits that melt in your mouth. It's GOP — Good Old Pleasure!"Cotton candy flavor made this offering a bit too sweet for some judges. They craved more substance and less frill. "It's a lightweight," said one. "I think it tastes like a state fair smells," said another. "The deep blue swirls remind me of the electoral map this November." One panelist detected a hint of licorice in the flavor. "I'm not offended, but I would prefer more cake and less banter."While this ice cream didn't win the debate among our judges, it did have a very soft texture and sweet taste that lingered. If the field of solid, cake-tasting ice creams wasn't so crowded, our panelists allowed they would have given Blue Bunny's offering more support. "It's puffy and bloated like some political policies," said one panelist. "But it just doesn't won't make it to the platform."
