Some great shopping Deals in cyberspace

The November issue of ShopSmart, a very useful magazine published by Consumer Reports, has a handy list of Web sites to consult for bargains:

Buzzillions.com: User reviews on high- and low-ticket items, with a constantly changing list of keywords for searching. • Ebates.com: Allows you to shop at 900 participating merchants, and then get rebates between 1 an d 26 percent, which you can keep or donate to charity. • Freeshipping.org: Helps you find out the minimum purchase to get • free shipping at more than 800 major retailers . • Heyitsfree.net: This blog was started by 25-year-old Ryan Eubanks, who searches the Web for deals so you don't have to. • Pricegrabber.com: Compare prices based on total cost, including shipping and tax. • Retailmenot.com: Finds coupon codes that work, based on input from shoppers who have used them. • Shopittome.com: Tell the site what you're looking for, and it will send you e-mails alerting you to sales and coupon codes. Tip: Sign up for e-mail delivery on Fridays, when most online retailers mark down clothing.

A thousand came and saw

More than 1,000 people last weekend toured Villa Terranova, the 18,000-square-foot home featured in last week's Homes section, according to builder Windstar Homes. At $15 per head, proceeds from the tour benefit All Children's Hospital. Tours continue today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., and also Oct. 9-12. The home is at 2040 Brightwaters Blvd. NE, St. Petersburg. Please note: This is a residential street, so drive and park with care. Also, this is a two-story house, and there's no elevator.

An angelic sale

Get a jump on your Christmas list and benefit a good cause Friday at Angels After Dark, where nearly 40 local and national merchandisers will sell home goods, jewelry and many other gift items. Shown at left is a pillow from Fiberologie in St. Petersburg. The annual boutique benefits children's ministries at St. Petersburg's First United Methodist Church. Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Bank of America Tower, 200 Central Ave., St. Petersburg, and there's free child care.

Early Halloween treats

There is a scary amount of Halloween merchandise in stores already, but that's only appropriate. Here are some items from Kohl's particularly useful in homes with young hobgoblins:

• Got a little witch who thinks water will make her melt? Try dressing up the bath with this creepy-fun shower curtain (the eyes glow in the dark!). It's $19.99; other bath accessories such as mitts also are available.

• The problem with carving pumpkins is 1) the possibility of injury, and 2) the fact that carved pumpkins rot quickly in Florida. To the rescue: decoration kits that involve no cutting. Bonus: You can reuse them. This spider kit is $14.99; also available are a cat, a turkey, and a spider with tea light holders.

Dusting spray that's easy on the nose

We are, of course, deeply suspicious of any product promising to make dusting more pleasant. But the Endust people might have a point when they note that the scent of dusting sprays may irritate those of us with allergies and asthma as much as disturbing the dust. If that makes sense to you, check out Endust Free Dusting and Cleaning Spray, which claims to be the only fragrance-free, hypo-allergenic product of its kind.
