Bring color inside when it fades outside

Shrug off the blahs with rugs

Neutral carpets and hardwood, tile or marble floors can be awakened with colorful area rugs. Area rugs or simple throw rugs can transform a room without the expense of remodeling. Once a colorful area rug has been selected, add a few accent pieces of the same colors throughout the room for balance and continuity.

Faux florals bring real cheer

Picking flowers might not be possible, but you can still add flowers to a room with a high-quality artificial floral arrangement. "High quality" is the key for use in the dining room, living room and/or foyer. Some prefer floral art on the wall; that's fine, too. Silk green plants work well, as they need no care other than an occasional dusting.

Bringing color to your kitchen with colorful dishes. They can be a variety of hues to fit your color scheme. Don't be afraid of color — it's fun. If buying dishes is more than you want to do, you can add colorful place mats, tablecloths or napkins. Or try large appliances in colors, or small ones like toasters, coffeemakers and blenders.

Rosemary Sadez Friedmann, an interior designer in Naples, is author of "Mystery of Color."

Don't despair when colors fade outside. Make your own colors inside. Summer greens and vibrant colors of flowers can be preserved with just a few simple "magical" design strokes.

Let's see how.

Toss around color, and rev up the bed

Don't forget throw pillows. They are easy to buy and easy to replace when you become tired of them, and they toss nicely on sofas, love seats, easy chairs and beds. Speaking of beds, how about buying colorful sheets and pillowcases? Fresh, new bedding can make sleeping a little more fun and relaxing.
