Easy being green: One-stop sorting for recyclables

Do you have several containers around your house to sort out the recyclables from the trash? Is one garbage bin in the kitchen, but the recyclable containers are in the garage? Here are two all-in-one containers that might make your life a little easier. Times staff and wires

Smart Bin

Created by Toronto-based Smart Products, the Smart Bin is available with two or three compartments. Homeowners can separate their organic, recycling and waste in a stainless steel push-pedal bin.

Made of post-consumer plastics, the Smart Bin makes the task of sorting and recycling a snap. "This bin is designed not only to solve the problem of separating waste, but perhaps more importantly, dispel the notion that recycling can't be fashionable," says company co-founder Steven Israel.

Smart Bins are available in both stainless steel or painted metal colors, and come in a range of sizes and configurations with prices ranging from about $70 to $100. They're sold at Costco stores, Walmart.com and Target.com.

Mode Premium All-In-One Recycling Center

The center allows you to sort glass, plastic, metal and paper, and crushes items up to 66 percent when you step on its foot pedal (no electricity necessary).

Compacted items drop into a rear bin, which comes in 8- and 5-gallon sizes that nest for easy transporting. Bonus recyclable bin liners are included.

An eco-track system measures your recycling habits so you can pat yourself on the back for making such a positive impact. No need to worry about missing pickup days because the recycling-day reminder won't let you.

The center costs $299 and is available at Frontgate.com, Williams-Sonoma.com, Brookstone.com and other retailers.
