Decorative painting on ceilings dates back thousands of years. Some say that this art form reached its zenith during the 15th century when Michelangelo (among others) created frescoes to adorn palaces and cathedrals. But even if your home is not as lofty as the Sistine Chapel, that doesn't mean that a ceiling treatment might not be appropriate to enhance your space. • In the photograph here, the domed ceiling in this entry was beautiful in its own right. When further enhanced with the softly textured ochre background and the custom-created design over-painted in a bronze finish, the effect is amazing. The design painted in the dome repeats shapes seen in the iron railings below, and the overall effect further "deepens" the dome and makes it a grand focal point. • Ideas for adding decoration to your ceilings run from something as simple as a textured treatment to the more complex design seen here, or even a more elaborate treatment like clouds with cherubs peeking from behind. The only limit is your imagination. • As in any design element as important and visible as this is in your home, the key to success is in the execution. Some of the more simple ideas could be something for anyone to undertake, but for a complex design, an artisan with the proper equipment and talent to undertake a major project of this nature is probably best called in.
