Expert advice: the breakfront cabinet

A breakfront cabinet is one that is designed such that the center portion of the cabinet projects beyond the two flanking end sections. This design offers a great deal of architectural interest over what might otherwise just be a less interesting, flat front cabinet. The breakfront design concept can also be used in a run of cabinetry in a good kitchen design. • In the photograph shown, the very long run of cabinetry, drawers and countertop was well served by projecting the area that houses the cook top and drawers below. While the cabinets and drawers are all beautiful, just this jog of a few inches offers the eye a "resting point", allowing us to then view the central area, and move on from there to the rest of the length. • Here also, the arched toe-kick underneath gives the sense that the stove area is a separate piece of furniture — slid into the run of cabinets — even though all of the cabinetry is painted in the same warm, creamy tone. Design ideas like these are what can separate an exceptional kitchen design from a merely good one, and are what you should look for when you seek the advice of a design professional. • A major kitchen renovation is generally a considerable investment, and starting with a great design will help to ensure your ultimate satisfaction when the project is completed.
